Kumtura Cave New No. 2 (GK21) is one of the earliest surviving caves in the valley-mouth area of the Kumtura Caves in Kuqa, Xinjiang. Dating to around the 5th century CE (Northern Dynasties period), it is a representative cave from the early phase of the site. Known for its distinctive square domed ceiling and fine early murals, the cave is valuable material evidence for the study of ancient Kucha Buddhist art and its development.

## Case Method

Because of Kumtura's location, spatial structure and conservation conditions, miscLab used a digitization path of physical reproduction first, restoration second, and digitization of the replica last. Although this path increases the work cost severalfold, it can restore the mural's appearance with almost no damage and preserve a physical object suitable for research and collection.
